Abstract: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that management of the five core assets: people, things, time, space and money is the same same for all market sectors. The critical requirement is the design of the data structures and it is the vocabulary and data that makes the software application "market-sector friendly". An outline business case for making available knowledge on corporate assets is then considered. The presentation of information held in large asset databases is re-examined and it is concluded that, so long as the design of the data structures is addressed at a high business level, the views required of the data may be arranged such that relevant knowledge may be gained. The paper draws on a number of case studies: product definition, drawing management and customer asset support from the aerospace to defence industries; design engineering from the aerospace to food industry and asset management from IT service to defence and transport.
